Saints were back at it for Fall Community Day 2024! On Wednesday, Oct. 2, approximately 790 student, staff and faculty volunteers served across the Twin Ports at sites both new and familiar.

Volunteers spent the day on campus and across the Twin Ports. Site highlights included:

• Northland Adaptive Recreation and Duluth Superior Sailing Association
• Buckthorn removal on campus
• Loaves & Fishes
• Udac & Duluth Community Garden program
• Three area elementary schools

caught up with the group volunteering with Loaves & Fishes. Students weeded the grounds of the Olive Branch, an emergency shelter for women and families in Duluth, MN. Education Abroad Advisor Callie Ronstrom explained to WDIO, 鈥淥ne of our values at the College is community, and so, part of what we鈥檙e hoping that we instill in the students is that sense of community and responsibility to the local communities that they are a part of while they鈥檙e here at 网红吃瓜.鈥�

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great experience,鈥� added Fergus Oulman 鈥�28. 鈥淚鈥檓 really enjoying it and really connecting with the community and connecting with the other classmates.鈥�

Volunteering with a group of students with Northland Adaptive Recreation and Duluth Superior Sailing Association, Dr. Jeremy Craycraft, associate professor of Music, echoed those sentiments in a interview: 鈥淚 think it sets the tone for the year for us. It鈥檚 making sure that students recognize that it鈥檚 not just about being on campus and studying. It鈥檚 about what we鈥檙e doing out in the community to just be good citizens. You know, the idea of volunteerism is something a lot of our students come to, but they may not have done it sort of on their own accord, and the idea is that even though we鈥檙e curating this they鈥檙e basically getting to the point now where they鈥檙e going to try to start thinking about volunteering on their own after college. And this is sort of just, I think, preparation for that.鈥�
